Marta Kostyuk v Claire Liu Head to Head
It is 1-1 between the two ladies; they last met in the 2022 WTA Doha qualifiers, where Kostyuk won in straight sets.

World No. 40 Marta Kostyuk, seeded #32 for this year’s Italian Open, started with a bye into round two.
It serves her well, considering the season she has had so far. In April, she reached a career-high at the 36th spot, while her present tally stands at 17-10.
Her defining moment was the title run at the ATX Open, where she bagged her first WTA trophy. In addition, the 20-year-old Ukrainian also reached the quarterfinal in WTA Adelaide 1 and Thailand Open and round three in the Aus Open.
But her form on clay leaves a lot to be asked. Kostyuk last played in the Madrid Masters, where she fell to Camila Osorio in her opening match.
It may also be in part due to her form on the surface; her highlights include an R16 appearance in the 2021 French Open and two doubles quarterfinals in the same tournament.
Marta’s lack of experience may be a factor here, but lucky for her, Liu is in a similar boat.

Claire Liu had to work quite hard to earn her opening win in Rome. Facing Italy’s Camilla Rosatello (ranked #296), it took the 22-year-old two and a half hours to win the match 6-7(11), 6-2, 6-2.
That win puts Liu at 10-13 for the year – which is not the best place to be in.
The victory also marked her first clay-court win of the season, too – she went without a win in Charleston, Madrid, and most recently, Saint Malo.
Credit where it is due, she did reach the third round in the Miami Open and round two in Adelaide 1 – as a qualifier. These were among her best runs of the season.
On the whole, however, she does have a decent clay pedigree – notably from her runner-up feat in Rabat last season and the title run in Clarins Open Challenger.

This match can swing either way, but Kostyuk will start as the odds-on favourite owing to her momentum.
