Borna Coric v Roberto Carballes Baena Head to Head

Coric has a perfect 3-0 record against the Spaniard. One of those wins came in a lower level tournament in 2014, while the other two wins were at the U.S. Open and Miami Open in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

No. 15 seed Borna Coric came back from a set down to beat Thiago Monteiro in a three-set thriller on Saturday and moved into the third round of the Rome Masters.

The win was also the Croatian’s 200th victory at the tour-level, nine years after registering his first win in Umag in 2014.

The world no. 16 Coric, who had come into the tournament after regaining form at the Madrid Open, where he made it to the semifinals.

Saturday’s win improved Coric to 12-10 overall and 5-3 on the clay this year. The 26-year-old was slow off the blocks this year, reaching just two quarterfinals in the first quarter. But a run to the semifinals in Madrid would have boosted his confidence and that may have helped him in winning a nail-biter against Monteiro on Saturday.

After the Brazilian took the first set, Coric saved a match point in the second set tiebreak to stay in the contest. The third set went the distance as well, with the Croatian converting his only match point and completing a 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-5) victory in three hours and 34 minutes.

Carballes Baena Battles Past Evans

Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena battled past Daniel Evans in a marathon second round contest that lasted three hours and 48 minutes.

Carballes Baena, who had won his first round match against Hugo Dellien 6-2, 6-3, had not faced a single break point in the opener, but he was broken thrice by Evans in the second round. Carballes Baena too converted three break points to win the longest three-set match of the season.

The victory helped the world no. 51 improve his season record to 12-11 and his season clay record to 10-6.

The Spaniard had earlier beaten Alexandre Muller in the final of the Marrakech open to lift his second ATP title and a first since 2018, when he had won the Ecuador Open.
