Rublev Rolls Past Molcan

World no. 6 Andrey Rublev defeated Alex Molcan in straight sets in the second round of the Rome Masters on Saturday to remain strong on clay in 2023.

The Russian saved both the break points that he faced against the world no. 59 and converted 2 of 6 break points to win the rain-interrupted contest 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 19 minutes.

Thanks to the win Rublev is now 24-10 in 2023. While he was excellent on hard courts, he has been ever better on clay, claiming his first Masters 1000 title in Monte-Carlo. He followed it up with a runner-up finish in Banja Luka, but went down to Karen Khachanov in the round of 16 in Madrid. However, he paired with Khachanov to win the Madrid doubles title for his first Masters 1000 doubles title.

Earlier this year, Rublev was a finalist in Dubai and also made it to the last eight at the Australian Open.

In Rome, he is playing for the fourth time. His best was a quarterfinal appearance in 2021. He will need to win the next two matches to equal his best.
