Tsitsipas Eases Past Borges

Last year’s finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas eased into the third round with a straight sets win over Portugal’s Nuno Borges.

The Greek was in commanding position when rain stopped play on Saturday and he came back Sunday and completed the formalities with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

The one hour and 11 minutes contest saw the world no. 5 win 87% points on his first serve. He did not allow Borges a single opportunity to break serve but had six breaking chances in the match and he capitalised on half of those chances.

Tsitsipas, who lost to Novak Djokovic in last year’s final, improved to 24-7 overall and 10-3 on clay this season. The Australian Open runner-up was also a finalist at the Barcelona Open but he is yet to win his first title of the season.

He is an excellent player on clay and four of his nine titles have come on the surface. In addition he has also had seven runner-up finishes on clay court events.

Having got off to a great start he will be hoping to continue his winning momentum on Monday.

Sonego Marches On

2021 semifinalist Lorenzo Sonego marched into the third round with a second consecutive straight sets win in the tournament on Saturday.

The Italian, who had cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jeremy Chardy in the first round, needed an hour and 46 minutes to beat Yoshihito Nishioka 7-5, 6-3.

The win over the 25th seed Japanese saw Sonega win 77% points on his first serve; he also saved 4 of 5 break points and converted half of the six break points that he held.

The world no. 48 improved to 4-3 on clay and 12-12 overall with the two wins in Rome. He has had two quarterfinal finishes earlier this year in Montpellier and Dubai and was in the round of 16 in Miami. But on clay he had struggled initially winning just two matches in the first three tournaments.

Tsitsipas v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas is the superior player in this contest and has won both their previous matches. The Greek has also reached at least the quarterfinals of all the three previous clay court tournaments, so expect Tsitsipas to ease into the round of 16.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Tsitsipas to win: 1/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 4/5
