Beatriz Haddad Maia reached the fourth round of the Italian Open on her tournament debut, beating Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette 7-5 6-4 in two hours and 11 minutes.

Although the match should have been over at least half an hour earlier, Haddad Maia should be delighted to get the job done in the wake of a late surge from her opponent.

The first set was evenly contested and which lasted and hour and eight minutes in front of a packed Pietrangeli court. The Brazilian garnered the decisive break at 6-5 and coolly served for a one-set lead.

With momentum on her side, Haddad Maia began to dictate the patterns of play and raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set. But once Linette held at 1-4, she kept applying the pressure behind the return and nearly levelled the set when she spurned two break back points at 3-4.

Haddad Maia held on and served for the match to love a few games later.

Another top 10 seed is out of this year’s Italian Open. Colombia’s former World No. 33 accounted for the fifth seed Caroline Garcia, winning 6-4 6-4 in and hour and 55 minutes.

Osorio recorded her career-best win as a result and advanced into the last 16 of the WTA 1000 event for the first time.

After a subdued start to the season due to injury, Osorio has bounced back in impressive fashion on clay, reaching the third round in Madrid two weeks ago and now going a round better.

The Colombian’s variety wreaked havoc in Garcia’s power-packed game with the Frenchwoman tallying a whopping 38 unforced errors to Osorio’s 11.
