Medvedev Wins First Match in Rome

Daniil Medvedev won his first  match ever at the Rome Masters when the third seed knocked out Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori in straight sets on Sunday.

The world no. 3, who has been in stellar form this season, has once again found things difficult on clay, but the Russian will be eager to go deep in Rome, particularly after the start that he has had.

Medvedev needed an hour and 29 minutes to beat the world no. 43, 6-4, 6-2. He was slow off the blocks though as Ruusuvuori got an early break and led 0-3, but Medvedev soon found his footing and came back with two breaks to take the opening set.

In the second set both exchanged an early break, but it was the former no. 1, who raced away with the match with two more breaks of serves.

Medvedev improved to 34-5 in 2023 and he is 5-2 on clay. From mid-February to the start of April, Medvedev featured in five tournaments and reached the finals in all five. While he won the titles in Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai and Miami, he finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in Indian Wells.

But he has once again found the going tough on clay. Medvedev lost in the last eight stage in Monte Carlo and the round of 16 in Madrid.

It is the only surface where he has recorded more losses than wins at the tour level. But given his outstanding form this season, he would be hoping to earn more wins on the surface this season.

Zapata Miralles Overcomes Slow Start to Win on Debut

After a putting up a strong show on his Madrid debut, Bernabe Zapata Miralles has got off to an impressive start in his first ever main draw appearance in Rome.

The Spaniard, ranked no. 38th in the world, was not off to a great start as he conceded a double break and fell 0-3 behind. But he recovered quickly and broke the world no. 66 thrice in the first set. He then went on to take complete control of the match in the next set, breaking the Australian twice and clinching the match 6-4, 6-1.

It has been a year of many firsts for Zapata Miralles and there could be more on his way.

He lost all five of his hard court matches this year, but is 14-7 on clay courts. That run includes his first two semifinal appearances in Buenos Aires and Rio and he was also a quarterfinalist in Estoril.

Can the 26-year-old 31st seed continue making progress in Rome?

Medvedev v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip

It’s a tricky third round contest for the third seed. Zapata Miralles is a clay court specialist and has consistently dished out good performances throughout this season. He will challenge Medvedev, for whom clay is the least preferred surface.

But Medvedev has looked in decent form in his previous two tournaments on clay this year. He hasn’t gone too deep but a 5-2 start on clay looks promising and he will be looking to build on that.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Medvedev to win: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
