Zverev Comes Back to Down Goffin

Alexander Zverev bounced back after dropping the first set to oust David Goffin in the second round of the Rome Masters on Sunday.

Ranked no. 22nd in the world, Zverev missed two set points on Goffin’s serve in the ninth game of the opening set. He then lost three games in a row to allow the Belgian take a one-set-to-love lead.

In the second set, the German found himself 0-2 down, but he bounced back and broke Goffin three times in the set to tie the match and force the decider.

It was one serve for the first nine games of the third set but Zverev got the decisive break in the 10th game and clinched the two hours and 27 minutes match 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Zverev, 26, has an excellent 17-5 record in Rome. He was a champion in 2017 and a runner-up in 2018, a quarterfinalist in 2021 and a semifinalist last year.

He will be looking to make another deep run, but his form has been dodgy this season and a 12-12 season record before the start of Rome was a reflection of that.

Zverev was a semifinalist in Dubai but did not go past the round of 16 in any of the other tournaments. He will be hoping to change that in Rome and a gutsy comeback win in the second round would have certainly given him plenty of confidence.

Wolf Stuns Hurkacz

World no. 54 JJ Wolf stunned 14th seed Hubert Hurkacz to advance to the third round of the Rome Masters.

Hurkacz struck 8 aces and 22 winners, but did not hold a break point even once in the match, while Wolf broke the Pole once in each set to win 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 17 minutes.

Surprisingly this turned out to be an easier win for Wolf compared to his first round win over Hugo Grenier. Wolf had beaten the lucky loser 7-5, 7-5 but had been broken once in that contest.

With the two wins in Rome, Wolf is now 4-2 on clay and 13-9 overall this year.

Wolf, who made his round of 16 debut at a Grand Slam at the Australian Open earlier this year, will be playing in the third round of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time.

Some other highlights of his season included a semifinal finish in Dallas and a quarterfinal finish in Houston.
