World no. 20 Jelena Ostapenko defeated eighth seed Daria Kasatkina in the fourth round to reach the last eight in Rome for the third time in her career.

The former French Open champion was broken in the very first game of the match. She pulled back the break immediately in the very next game, but found herself another break down in the seventh game. Ostapenko, however, won three games in a row to take the first set.

Kasatkina tied the match at one-set apiece after getting the solitary break of the second set in the first game, and then saving 7 of 7 break points.

The third set was expected to be a close one but it was anything but close as Ostapenko took complete control of the proceedings and raced to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 victory.

The 20th seed improved to 17-10 in 2023 and it will be the second time this year that she will be playing in a quarterfinal. Earlier she had made it to the last eight at the Australian Open.

Ostapenko had begun her Italian Open campaign with a three-set win over Sorana Cirstea in the second round and then she had knocked out the 10th seed Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets.

Badosa Battles Past Muchova

She had lost in the round of 16 in her Rome debut last year, but this year Paula Badosa is through to the quarterfinals. The Spaniard needed three hours and five minutes to overcome the world no. 52 on Tuesday.

Badosa came back from 2-4 down in the first set to take a one-set-to-love lead and then lost a closely contested second set in the tiebreak after she had come back from a break down on three occasions.

The world no. 35 then dominated the third set, breaking Muchova twice and clinching the marathon contest 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.

This was the Spaniard’s second three-set win in the tournament, following her comeback victory over Anna-Lena Friedsam in the first round. Badosa had won the next two rounds in straight sets, upsetting fourth seed Ons Jabeur in the second and the 32nd seed Marta Kostyuk in the third round.

A semifinalist in Adelaide-2, Badosa lost in the quarterfinals in Charleston and Stuttgart this year. She goes into her fourth quarterfinal of the season with an overall season record of 17-7 and an overall clay court record of 11-3 this year.
