Shuai Zhang has a 4-9 record for the season and hasn’t played since Charleston at the start of April.
The 34-year-old last won a match on Tour in Lyon where she defeated Madison Brengle in the first round. Unfortunately for Zheng her title defense in that event came to a halt a round later and she has since been in a never-ending dark pit when it comes to her form this year.
Zhang has lost her status as China’s top-ranked woman to new star Qinwen Zheng. And the World No. 29 is defending a huge chunk of points garnered in 2022 in the second half of the season.
So it is highly significant that Zhang managed to pick up wins and plenty of them before the end of the clay season.

Anna-Lena Friedsam suffered a shock straight sets loss to Yue Yuan at the Paris 125K event just a week ago.
That defeat came on the backdrop of her best performance this season in a losing effort at the Italian Open against former No. 2 Paula Badosa.
While injuries have played a major part in Friedsam’s rocky road in recent years, her fluctuating brilliance can at times be substituted with her inconsistency which is why she has not been close to her previous career high of No. 45.
She comes into Monday’s match as the favorite against an out-of-form Shuai Zhang. Can she live up to that tag?

Friedsam is extremely erratic and inconsistent, but Zhang has fared poorly this season and there is hardly any reason to believe she can mastermind an upset.
