Shelton Struggles Continue

Since making it to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open – and stunning the world in the process – Shelton has barely managed to cause a ripple on the tour.

In fact in the nine tournaments he’s played at the highest level since that superb run at the season’s first Grand Slam, Shelton has won just three main draw matches. Such has been his poor run that Shelton was forced to feature on the Challenger circuit in Cagliari in the lead-up to the Rome Masters.

And while Shelton made it to the last eight there, he followed that up with a second round loss to Alexander Bublik in Rome.

Clay has been Shelton’s bugbear too. He has barely managed to make a dent on this surface at the highest level, winning just a couple of matches on it this season.

Which is why despite going up against a player ranked about 50 places behind him, he starts a second favourite in this match.

Cecchinato Solid on Clay

He hadn’t quite made a good start to the clay court season earlier this year in South American but Cecchinato looks to have turned a corner. At least for now.

The Italian player, who was once ranked 16th in the world, came through to make the semifinals of the Estoril Open on the back of wins over Diego Schwartzman and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Cecchinato followed that up with having to go through the qualifiers to make the main draw of the Madrid Masters where he entered the second round. And then in Rome where he got a direct entry, Cecchinato overcame Mackenzie McDonald and Roberto Bautista-Agut to reach the third round.

With those kind of performances on clay, it’s no surprise he has the edge coming up against Shelton. Can he live up to those odds though?

Shelton v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip

Shelton might be ranked much higher than his opponent but on clay it’s Cecchinato who holds the key.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cecchinato to win: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 4/5
