Martincova Looks to Turn the Tide

It’s no secret that Tereza Martincova put together the best year of her career in 2021, winning a career-best 26 matches on Tour and reaching her first WTA final in Ostrava.

A few months into the 2022 season, Martincova climbed to a career-high No. 40. But she was comparatively a shadow of the player that enjoyed reasonable success a year earlier.

Martincova finished with a negative win-loss record last season (16-26) managing just a semifinal in Nottingham as a season highlight. This year, she’s seen her ranking cascade to a low No. 95 which is where she finds herself in coming to Strasbourg.

The Czech has fared poorly at Tour-level, with a 1-6 record. But on the ITF circuit she is 4-2, registering all four wins in her runner-up finish in Zaragoza where she lost to Viktoriya Tomova.

Navarro Enjoys Steady Rise

With Martincova struggling, Emma Navarro has enjoyed a steady rise in the rankings of late. The 22-year-old American sits at a career-high No. 83 in the rankings ahead of her tournament debut in Strasbourg.

Navarro has a jaw-dropping 23-4 record on the ITF circuit. She has reached four finals at that level and collected three titles including the prestigious W100 in Charleston where she defeated Peyton Stearns 7-5 in the third.

Most of Navarro’s success had primarily come on home soil, so it will be intriguing to see how she will fare outside her comfort zone.

Although she won her first title of the season in Naples, her record outside home territory in recent weeks reads 2-2, losing at both Saint-Malo 125K and W100 Madrid ITF.

Let’s see if she can eradicate her recent form when she plays Tereza Martincova for the second time.

Martincova v Navarro Prediction and Tip

After a below-par start to life on the professional scene a few seasons back, it’s been refreshing to see Navarro make huge strides this season. She is still waiting for her breakthrough moment at Tour level, and although it is unlikely to come this week, she’s got all the momentum in the world to beat Martincova quite comfortably here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Navarro to win: 4/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Navarro to win in straight sets: 1/1
