Alexander Bublik v Marcos Giron Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these players with both having won one apiece. They have played once on clay – in the 2022 Rome Masters – and it was Giron who came through.

Bublik Slowly Improving on Clay for the Season

A semifinalist at the Marseille Open earlier this season, Bublik had struggled to get going after that that. So much so that it affected his start to the clay court season with Bublik losing first round matches at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open.

That gave him a five-match losing streak at the highest level and he came into the Madrid Masters looking form-cooked.

A very hard-fought first round win over Daniel Elahi Galan stalled that run before he gave Holger Rune a bit of a fight in the second round. A quarterfinal at the Aix en Provence Challenger would have helped him paper over some of his technical issues and that showed in Rome.

In both his first two rounds there, Bublik went in as a second favourite. He was 11/10 against Pedro Martinez in the first round and then again an 11/10 against Ben Shelton in the second. And he won them both to set up a meeting with Casper Ruud.

He gave Ruud a working over before falling in three sets, but that should help him enter this competition on the back of some confidence here.

Giron 4-4 on Clay in 2023

It’s been a bit of a mixed bag for Giron in the clay court competitions he has played this season, which in turn is not too different from his overall record for the year.

The American, who touched a career-best ranking of 49th at one point, is 12-12 on win-loss in 2023 with four wins and four defeats coming on clay.

It started well for Giron as he reached the second round on the clay courts of Houston and followed it up with a quarterfinal appearance in Munich. Unfortunately for him after that, defeats to Sebastian Baez and Roman Safiullin in Madrid and Rome have meant he hasn’t got too much to show for the season.

As a result of those two results on the Masters circuit, Giron’s ranking has also plummeted to 74th in the world and he now makes this last tournament before the French Open hoping to turn things around.

He could face a solid test.

Bublik v Giron Prediction and Tip

Bublik starts off a 4/5 favourite but to be honest there’s not much to choose between these two. Expect this to be a keen tussle that goes to a third.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Bublik to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
