Putintseva on an Average Run

Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva is starting in the 2023 Grand Prix La Princesse Lalla Meryem on the back of a mediocre clay swing.

In her last three tournaments – spanning across Charleston, Madrid, and Rome – the 28-year-old failed to move past round two. In the States, she fell to Ekaterina Alexandrova, while in Madrid and the Italian Open, she was beaten by the top-10 players like Caroline Garcia and Coco Gauff.

Perhaps, being placed in a relatively easier draw when compared to the WTA 1000 and 500 events can allow Putintseva to bag more wins. Right now, her tally is at 10-12, with her best showing being the quarterfinal run in the Hobart International in January.

Since then, Yulia has not managed to win more than one main-draw match in any tournament.

Here in Rabat, should she beat Aouni, she will play the Frenchwoman Leolia Jeanjean next. That should give her some confidence for a strong start.

Aouni Earns a Wildcard

Aya El Aouni of Morocco is a 17-year-old little-known player who is set to make her WTA Tour debut on Monday. As a Junior, her highest ranking is #31, while in the big leagues, she is currently placed at #1230.

She has not played a whole lot of tennis either – at least as a senior player. She has only two tournaments to her name in 2023 – ITF Antalya 12 and 13 – where she was beaten in the early rounds.

That said, Aouni did feature in plenty of junior tournaments where she enjoyed some success. She won two junior events in Hammamet and later reached the final in Cairo.

It was a similar story in 2022 as well, where she competed largely in junior events with a handful of appearances in upper-tier tournaments.

Putintseva v Aouni Prediction and Tip

Expect a one-sided affair with no real surprises – unless Putintseva is having a really bad day at work. It is not unheard of for players to lose to WTA debutants, and Yulia is clearly not in the best of form to take this match for granted.

Aya may shine at home so punters may want to consider backing outcomes that favour her in some way.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Putintseva to win: 1/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 18.5 games in the match: 5/6
