Cerundolo Reached Rome Quarterfinals

Francisco Cerundolo had a bye in the first round for being among the top four seeds at the tournament and will now battle Juan Pablo Varillas in an all-South American clash.

As daunting as that matchup is on paper, Cerundolo will be unfazed by the challenge given his recent return to top form.

The Argentine reached the quarterfinals in Rome – his first at Masters level on clay. He earned an astonishing win over home crowd favorite Jannik Sinner in the round of 16, shooting the entire city to its core.

But Cerundolo’s defeat to Casper Ruud in his next match reinforced the notion that, while he is intermittently brilliant, he is equally inconsistent.

Still, though, he did not walk away from Rome empty-handed. Cerundolo re-entered the top 30 for the second time and has the chance to equal his previous career high of No. 24 this week.

Varillas Edges Ramos Vinolas in Thriller

Juan Pablo Varillas won his opening match in Lyon in a topsy-turvy affair against Spanish veteran Albert Ramos Vinolas.

The match lasted three hours and 12 minutes with Varillas prevailing 3-6 7-6 6-4 – his first win in four matches.

In a match pitting 66th-ranked Ramos Vinolas and the 97th-ranked Varillas, it was the higher-ranked Spaniard who asserted control right from the off, breaking the Peruvian to take a 4-2 lead in the first set before wrapping it up a few games later in 46 minutes.

But Ramos Vinolas’ dominance did not last for long despite taking a 2-0 lead in the second set. Varillas was more precise in his serving and his ground stroke started to find the right spots on the court. Eventually, he was able to restore parity in the tiebreak, storming back from 2-4 down.

In the decider, the match went on serve until the ninth game when the Spaniard faced the first break points od the third set and he could not escape. VVarillas converted the second of his break point and went on to serve for a place in the second round.

Cerundolo v Varillas Prediction and Tip

Cerundolo played at a frightening pace from the baseline in Rome, using his monstrous forehand to blow Sinner off the court. Anything close to that level, and he’ll prove an insurmountable challenger for Varillas.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cerundolo to win: 4/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Cerundolo to win in straight sets: 10/11
