Brandon Nakashima v Arthur Rinderknech Head to Head

This will be their first tour level meeting. They met once at a lower level tournament in 2021, with Rinderknech winning that match on hard court.

Nakashima Ousts Schwartzman

World no. 52 Brandon Nakashima won his first match in two months when he knocked out Diego Schwartzman in the first round of the Lyon Open on Monday.

The American, who had last won a match in the first round in Miami, ended a three-match losing streak with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over the Argentine.

The 21-year-old held as many as 16 break points in the match, and he capitalised on five of them. In contrast he faced seven break points in the match and he saved four of them

It has been a disappointing season so far for Nakashima, who is 5-7 across levels and 1-2 on clay in 2023. That is in stark contrast to a 41-26 season last year, which included his maiden ATP tour title in San Diego and also the ATP NextGen Finals title.

Nakashima doesn’t have a great clay court record, having played very little on the surface. But having got off to a good start in Lyon, can he go on to reach his first quarterfinal of the season?

Rinderknech Cruises Past Harris

World no. 78 Arthur Rinderknech cruised past qualifier Lloyd Harris in the first round in Lyon to claim his second win on clay this year.

Rinderknech’s first win on the surface this year had come against Flavio Cobolli in the first round in Rome. He has otherwise had a poor run this year and Monday’s win improved him to 4-8 on the tour.

Overall, the Frenchman is 7-11 in 2023, with his best performance being a semifinal finish in the Pau Challenger.

Rinderknech has struggled to win consecutive matches in the other tournaments, making first or second round exits. He, however, has a chance to reach his first quarterfinal on the tour this year.

Rinderknech was also a quarterfinalist in Lyon in 2021, but he had lost in the first round last year.

This year he won his first round match with 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 30 minutes. Rinderknech saved all four of the break points he faced and converted 3 of 7 to advance.

Nakashima v Rinderknech Prediction and Tip

Both the players have been struggling this season, but are off to a good start, so expect this match to be a close one. It may go the distance with Nakashima edging past the Frenchman.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Nakashima to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
