Lauren Davis v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these two players including one in the qualifiers of the 2023 Doha Open earlier this year. Davis leads 2-1 with her only loss coming in Doha where she was forced to retire because of an injury in the final set.
They had also faced off on the clay courts of Reus Open recently and Davis had won in three sets.

Sarah Iliev is currently ranked 686th in the world and had come into her first round match against Davis as a rank outsider with bookmakers offering 23/2 for her win.
For nearly an hour, it looked like Iliev was on a mission to destroy those odds as she broke Davis to go 2-0 up. Davis broke back to level things out only for Iliev to take a 4-2 lead in the first set. Soon she was serving for the set at 5-4 but that’s where Davis’ experience came through.
From that point onward, the American won nine games in a row, breaking her opponent five successive times to clinch a 7-5, 6-0 win in an hour and 28 minutes. A fighting Iliev was left to pick up the pieces as Davis registered her first main draw win on clay on the main circuit.
Davis had earlier lost in the first round of the Charleston, Madrid and Rome Open while entering the semifinal of the WTA 125 competition in Reus. Can she now make it two in two?

Tomova Stuns Cornet
A title win on the ITF circuit last month had helped Tomova break into the top 80 of the rankings while more recently she hit a career-best ranking of 71st in the world. Now featuring in this tournament for the first time in her career, the 1/1 underdog Tomova overcame a slow start to go past Alize Cornet in her opener.
Tomova was on court for over three hours as she registered a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Cornet and set up a second round meeting with Davis.
Down a set and 0-2 in the second, it seemed curtains for Tomova. The Bulgarian player, however, broke twice in a row, then failed to serve out the set at 5-3 before levelling things with a third break of serve in the 10th game of the second set.
Four successive breaks of serves took them to 3-3 before Tomova broke Cornet in the eighth game and then had a match-point off her own serve in the next. While Cornet saved that and levelled things out, she lost her serve yet again in the 12th game ensuring Tomova’s progress.

This could turn out to be an interesting match-up with a possibility of a third set looming large given all that has happened between them in the past.
