Mayar Sherif v Julia Riera Head to Head

Sherif and Reira have never faced off before this.

Sherif Routs Baindl

It did not take Sherif a lot of time to get past Kateryna Baindl in their first round match as she followed up a superlative performance in Madrid earlier this month with a solid showing in this encounter.

Having made the quarterfinals at the Madrid Open with wins over Camila Giorgi, Anhelina Kalinina, Caroline Garcia and Elise Mertens, Sherif had no trouble routing Baindl 6-1, 6-3 to reach the second round.

Sherif was on court for a shade over an hour and a half and faced just one break-point in the entire match. In turn she overcame Baindl serve on four occasions – twice in each of the two sets – to register the win.

A three-time WTA winner, all of which came on clay, Sherif has a very good chance of breaking into the top 50 of the WTA Rankings with a deep run in this competition. And with a 195th-ranked player up next, that job could get easier.

Riera Routs Mladenovic

Kristina Mladenovic is a former top-10 singles player who has transitioned to doubles tennis in more recent times. And while she did make it to the main draw here, she was no match for Riera in the first round of this tournament.

Riera was on court for a mere hour and seven minutes as she bull-dozed Mladenovic 6-3, 6-0 to continue with her run on clay.

A winner of two ITF tournaments this season, Riera was off to a flying start as she went 4-2 ahead and then broke Mladenovic to serve for the first set. While her French opponent broke back to narrow the lead down, that was the last game she would win.

From that point onward, Riera would win seven in a row including four service breaks to march on to round two.

And while she now faces a player who is in way better form than Mladenovic, Riera won’t feel too intimidated given her own recent runs.

Sherif v Riera Prediction and Tip

Expecting this to be a lot closer than the 1/4 odds on offer with Sherif expected to win but not before Riera has given her a working over.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 8/15
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 10/11
