Pavlyuchenkova Turns Back Time

In a battle between two 31-year-olds and the most experienced players in the field, it was Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who masterminded a shock win over top seed Magda Linette.

The Russian was playing in just her 16th match of the season. She had been out of the picture for six months due to a knee injury.

Her stuttering season had yielded six wins and eight defeats coming to Strasbourg. But she’s managed to even the win-loss record by knocking qualifier Gabueva and now the Australian Open semifinalist Linette.

Pavlyuchenkov was bright and blistering in a match where she was able to turn back time. She showcased her full clay-court repertoire.

The former Roland Garros finalist won five of her nine return games. By contrast, Linette won one of eight returns games.

Pavlyuchenkova was the better server throughout the match, winning 72% first-serve points and 53% behind her second serve.

Davis Holds Off Tomova

Lauren Davis was embroiled in a two-hour dogfight against Viktoriya Tomova, but was able to subdue the Bulgarian in three sets. Davis won 6-4 3-6 6-1 and she’s through to her first WTA quarterfinal since winning Hobart in January.

Davis is hardly a clay-court threat but was coming into this tournament on the back of a semifinal run at the 125K event in Reus.

She snapped her four-match losing run in first-round matches in Strasbourg beating Sarah Iliev on Monday. And she’s doubled her win tally by beating 71st-ranked Tomova who had upset home favorite Alize Cornet in the previous round.

Tomova’s serving frailties were fully punished by Davis. The Bulgarian recorded four double faults in the match and only won 56% first-serve points. Davis, by contrast, won 75% of first-serve points. The American was able to convert half of her eight break points and fend off three of five on her own serve.

Pavlyuchenkova v Davis Prediction and Tip

Even though these two players haven’t met in ages, Pavlyuchenkova is unlikely to stumble after her mammoth win over Linette. The Russian was surprisingly clinical and astute from the baseline. She’ll need that class in abundance here to extend her winning record over the American. Expecting Pavlyuchenkova to edge this one in two tight sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Pavlyuchenkova to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 10/11
