Thanks to the win, the Bulgarian is now into the quarterfinal in Geneva for the second time in his career. In 2021, Dimitrov had been beaten in the last eight stage. This is also the first time this season that Dimitrov has reached the quarterfinal in a clay court tournament. He won one and lost one in each of his previous four clay court tournaments in Monte-Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid and Rome.

Christopher O’Connell looked in excellent touch in his second round match against Bernabe Zapata Miralles. The Aussie was leading 6-0, 3-0 when the Spaniard decided to quit.

The one-sided contest saw O’Connell drop just three points of his serve and four points on return in the first set. He continued to rule in the second set, before the world no. 37 withdrew from the match.

O’Connell’s performance in the second round was in stark contrast to his first round performance, when he ousted qualifier Nino Serdarusic 7-6, 6-7, 6-1 in a two hour and 42 minute contest.

With the win, O’Connell is 11-5 on clay this season (across levels). He was a semifinalist in Munich and a quarterfinalist in Marrakech and made it to the final four in Split Challenger.
