Paul Battles Past Barrere

He was knocked out in the round of 16 on his debut in 2021, but two years on, Tommy Paul made it to the last eight as he won his opening match at the Lyon Open against Grégoire Barrère on Wednesday.

Paul saved two set points to take the first set in the tiebreak. Barrere clawed his way back into the contest by getting the solitary break in the second, but it was Paul who had the last laugh as he got the only break of the third in the sixth game to win the two hour and 39 minute contest 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

The win was the season’s first tour-level victory on clay for the world no. 17, who was off to a 0-3 start on the surface.

Paul was however a finalist at the Aix en Provence Challenger on clay in the first week of May, going down to Andy Murray. He therefore has an overall record of 4-4 on clay this season.

He will be looking to reach a third tour-level semifinal of the season on Thursday.

He was a semifinalist at the Australian Open in what was his maiden final four appearance at a Grand Slam. He went a step ahead in Acapulco, but fell in the final to Alex de Minaur.

The American has an overall record of 17-9 this year and he is 20-10 across levels.
