Norrie Cruises Into the Last Eight

Defending champion Cameron Norrie cruised into the quarterfinals with a straight sets win over David Goffin in the round of 16 on Wednesday.

The second seed, who had a first round bye, needed an hour and 30 minutes to dispatch the Belgian 6-3, 6-4. Norrie saved 5 of 6 break points and converted half of the six that he held to reach the last eight for the first time on European clay this year. He had reached two finals on South American clay, losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the final in Buenos Aires but beating Alcaraz to lift the Rio title.

He also featured in the Auckland open final at the start of the season and thanks to all those performances, the world no. 14 is 26-9 overall and 13-5 on clay.

Norrie has an excellent record in Lyon. He finished runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2021, but he defeated Alex Molcan to lift the title in 2022. In addition he was also a semifinalist in his very first appearance in 2018.

Currently on a five-match win streak in Lyon, can left-handed Briton keep the run going?

Baez Rallies Past Cachin

World no. 44 Sebastean Baez rallied past compatriot Pedro Cachin in the second round on Wednesday to reach a tour level quarterfinal for the sixth time in 2023.

Baez, who captured the Cordoba Open title earlier this year, improved his tour-level clay court record to 14-8 in 2023.

The 22-year-old was also a semifinalist at the Turin Challenger last week.

Having began his campaign with a straight sets win over Marton Fucsovics in the first round, Baez needed two hours and 34 minutes to score the comeback win over Cachin.

Baez had 16 chances to break Cachin’s serve and he capitalised on six of them, while Cachin had 10 opportunities to break Baez and he could only take four of those chances as Baez won the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

This is Baez’s second appearance in Lyon. Last year, he was beaten by Norrie in the quarterfinals. Can he get his revenge over the Briton this year?
