Krejcikova on Shaky Grounds

In 2021, Barbora Krejcikova won the French Open singles and doubles and later on reached a career-high singles ranking of #2. This time around, if she can manage to reach the closing rounds in the singles draw, it would be a commendable feat.

The Czech, ranked World No. 13, is 20-10 ahead of the Paris Slam. Her best result is the title run in Dubai – where she beat a handful of big names like Daria Kasatkina, Petra Kvitova, Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, and Iga Swiatek.

Since then, Krejcikova reached the fourth round in Indian Wells, Miami, and Madrid. In the first two, she fell to Sabalenka, while in Spain, she was beaten by Petra Martic. Most recently, in Rome, the 27-year-old fell to Jelena Ostapenko in round three.

Much of Barbora’s season has seen such defeats – at the hands of well-established players – so perhaps, it may be a bit too harsh to undermine her chances entirely.

That said, she has been vulnerable of late, and Tsurenko has plenty of motivation to add to her opponent’s woes.

Tsurenko Enjoying a Superb Year

World No. 63 Lesia Tsurenko is having quite a spell in 2023. The 33-year-old Ukrainian is now 25-8 – with her best result being the runner-up feat in WTA Hua Hin. That run in Thailand was her first WTA final in four years.

Building on that success, Tsurenko made it to the third round in WTA 1000 events like Indian Wells Open, Madrid Open, and Rome Open.

On her journey, she defeated the likes of Jil Teichmann, Lucia Bronzetti, Elina Svitolina, Bernarda Pera, and Donna Vekic. In addition, Lesia featured in the semifinal at ITF Canberra in January.

Interestingly, she has posted a series of mixed results in Paris – round three in 2017 and 2019 and the fourth round in 2018.

Krejcikova v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

There is no doubt that Krejcikova will start as the heavy favourite – but Tsurenko will not go down without a fight. Barbora’s impeccable career – singles and doubles – will certainly weigh on Lesia’s mind – but she should look past that and focus on the wonderful year she has had. With some confidence, she can cause an early upset.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Krejcikova to win: 7/20
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
