Grabher’s Sudden Turnaround in Fortunes

Grabher was in a lot of strife coming into the clay court season having won just one main draw match in hardcourt competitions. Which is why when she lost her opener at the San Luis Potosi Open on the WTA 125 circuit late in March, it did not surprise too many.

Things have changed since.

First she made the third round at the Charleston Open, and followed it up with a second round appearance at the Madrid Open. And then at the Italian Open she made a direct entry into the main draw from where she entered the third round which included a win over Jil Teichmann.

Here in Rabat, she has taken a few steps further, making it to the final with a hard-fought three-set win over Julia Riera. And in doing so, she could well be on her way to breaking into the top 60 of the WTA Rankings for the first time in her career.

Can she topple her 102nd-ranked opponent?

Bronzetti Sends Stephens Packing

It’s not often do you see a player ranked outside the top 100 make it to the final of a WTA tournament but that’s what’s happened here as Bronzetti stunned Sloane Stephens in straight sets to enter the title-decider.

In a match that lasted a mere 62 minutes, Bronzetti clinched a 6-1, 6-1 win with five breaks of serves to her name from the six chances she got. In turn, Bronzetti did not face a single break-point.

This follows a quarterfinal win over Alycia Parks where again, Bronzetti had lost just two games.

What this means is that the Italian will enter next week ranked at least 72nd in the world even if she doesn’t win this. But if she does, she could close in on her previous career-best ranking of 50th on the WTA charts.
