Denis Shapovalov v Brandon Nakashima Head to Head

Brandon Nakashima leads their head-to-head 1-0 having defeated Denis Shapovalov at last year’s Wimbledon in four sets.

Shapovalov Missed Rome

Denis Shapovalov dropped outside the world’s top 30 for the first time since 2019. As a consequence of not playing at the Rome Masters, Shapovalov forfeited his quarterfinal points from last year’s edition of the event where he upset Rafael Nadal before losing to Casper Ruud.

Shapovalov has a paltry seven wins from 16 matches this season. In fact, the Australian Open was the last scene where he won successive matches.

And since then, he’s lost in the second round in five of his next seven tournaments. Although he is seeded at the French Open, his form contradicts his ranking.

Shapovalov has only played three matches on clay in singles, winning once against Jozef Kovalik in Madrid and losing his other two.

And with Brandon Nakashima coming off a great run in Lyon, Shapovalov could be staring at a potential third first-round exit in four previous visits to Paris.

Nakashima Loses Lyon Semis To Fils

Brandon Nakashima fell on the wrong end of a dramatic three-set battle against French teenager Arthur Fils in the semifinals of the Lyon Open. He lost the match in a final-set tiebreak 7-5.

The match lasted two hours and 54 minutes and as agonizing as the defeat was, Nakashima has little time to dwell on it, with a window of less than 48 hours to get to Paris and get ready for his first-round match against Shapovalov.

The American will return to the top 50 next week when the new rankings are updated and will come as a welcome relief after a turbulent start to the year due to injury.

But he’s managed to pick up his form at the right time even though clay is far from his preferred surface. Nakashima made the third round of the French Open last year on his main draw debut, only losing to an in-form Alexander Zverev.

He’ll also defend fourth-round points at Wimbledon at the start of July, so he cannot take his eye off the ball.

Shapovalov v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

Could this be the start of Shapovalov’s big fall from grace or just a minor slump in his season? The next few months will be significant for the Canadian’s career as he is only defending a few points until the US Open.

He arrives at Roland Garros slightly undercooked for his liking having played three singles matches on clay. Nakashima is rightly the favorite here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 35.5 games in the match: 8/15
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Nakashima to win: 5/6
