Stan Wawrinka v Albert Ramos-Vinolas Head to Head

It’s a rivalry that goes back to 2012 and Wawrinka has a perfect 7-0 record against the Spaniard.

Wawrinka has in fact dropped just two sets in their seven meetings but they will be playing for the first time since 2016. Their last meeting saw Wawrinka win in straight sets at Roland Garros in 2016.

Wawrinka Is 44-16 in Roland Garros

Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka has an outstanding 44-16 record at Roland Garros, where he will be making his 18th appearance this year.

Among his most notable performances in Roland Garros, he won the title by defeating Novak Djokovic in the final in 2015; he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in 2017 and made it to the semifinal in 2016 in addition to two quarterfinal finishes in 2013 and 2019.

But last year was the fourth time at the French Open when Wawrinka was beaten in the first round. The 38-year-old will be desperate to start off well this year. The Swiss has a 5-5 record on clay this year, which includes a run to the quarterfinals in the Bordeaux Challenger this month. Wawrinka had also won his first round matches in Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome but he fell in the second round of each of those tournaments.

So, overall Wawrinka has not had the same effect on clay that he had on hard and indoor courts this year. He made it to the last eight in Rotterdam and Marseille and made it to the fourth round in Indian Wells.

With age catching up, Wawrinka may not have too many Grand Slams left in him, but he still looks hungry to deliver and will be looking to make a strong start at Roland Garros and build on that.

Ramos-Vinolas Struggling This Season

Albert Ramos-Vinolas is an experienced campaigner, who established himself as a clay court specialist over the years, winning all four of his ATP titles on clay and playing 10 of his 11 career finals on the surface.

But this year, Ramos-Vinolas’s form has been dodgy. Barring a run to the semifinals in Cordoba and a quarterfinal finish in Rio, he has had little success on the tour. Recently he made it to the quarterfinals of the Bordeaux Challenger, but overall he has a 4-11 record in his last 15 matches, across levels, 13 of which have been played on clay.

The Spaniard’s last tournament saw him go down in the first round in Lyon.

Ramos-Vinolas has not had a great record in Grand Slams over his career, but the lefty produced his best result at Roland Garros in 2016, when he reached his only major quarterfinal but was prevented by Wawrinka from advancing further.

Can Ramos-Vinolas get his first win over Wawrinka?

Wawrinka v Ramos-Vinolas Prediction and Tip

Wawrinka has an exceptional record at Roland Garros and has been in decent touch this season. On top of that he has a 7-0 record against Ramos-Vinolas. Expect the Swiss to go in with the psychological edge and he should come out on top but may need more than three sets to get the job done.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Wawrinka to win: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 32.5 games in the match: 4/5
