Svitolina Wins Second Title in Strasbourg

Elina Svitolina got the perfect pre-French Open prep by winning her second title at the Strasbourg Open. It’s also her first WTA title as a mother defeating Anna Blinkova 6-2 6-3.

It’s Svitolina’s first title in almost two years and she’ll rise to inside the top 200. It is an incredible ranking jump after starting the week outside the top 500.

The Ukranian star has utilized her protected ranking status to get a spot in the main draw at the French Open where she will be a daunting first-round opponent for last year’s semifinalist Martina Trevisan.

It is pertinent to note that Svitolina only returned to action from maternity leave at the start of April and had to wait until this week to win her first Tour-level match at the Strasbourg Open.

She also played at the ITF level picking up one win in two tournaments and the WTA 125K event in Saint-Malo where she reached the final and lost to Sloane Stephens.

Trevisan Retires in Rabat

Martina Trevisan jetted to Paris much earlier than she anticipated after she was forced to retire midway through her quarterfinal match in Morocco’s capital against Julia Grabher.

Trevisan hasn’t given an update on the nature of the injury. But retiring was probably a preventive way of not hurting herself and putting her French Open preparations in doubt.

It is worth pointing out that the Italian lefty is defending a fair chunk of points in Paris after reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal at last year’s edition.

Replicating that run is not impossible but highly improbable. Prior to the week in Rabat, Trevisan was only 2-3 on clay, losing in the second round stage in her home country at the Italian Open.

And with her unsuccessful title defense at the Rabat Open, Trevisan needs to do a lot of heavy lifting in the next couple of weeks to keep her ranking in the top 30.

Can the 26th seed overcome her fitness concerns and knock out the former World No. 3?

Svitolina v Trevisan Prediction and Tip

Trevisan is facing a significant ranking fall if she loses this match. Svitolina has played herself into form and with doubts over the Italian’s fitness, it makes the Ukrainian an attractive pick on the moneyline.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Svitolina to win: 5/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Svitolina to win in three sets: 7/2
