Korda Ousts McDonald

The United States’ Sebastian Korda needed two hours and 36 minutes to win his first round match at the French Open on Sunday, but he didn’t need more than three sets to see off compatriot Mackenzie McDonald.

Korda made 45 unforced errors to McDonald’s 37, but he also struck 52 winners to his opponent’s 23 as he registered a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 victory.

Korda had as many as 19 opportunities to break McDonald’s serve but he could capitalise on just seven of those chances. In contrast, McDonald had seven breaking chances and he converted four of them. While Korda’s percentage of break point conversion may have been just 37% , he made sure he had one more break than his opponent in each set. The world no. 30 broke McDonald twice in the first set, four times in the second and once in the third to sail into the second round for the third time in Roland Garros.

He had made it to the Round of 16 on his debut in 2020 and had reached the third round last year.

Monday’s win improved Korda to 9-4 this season. He had reached the final in Adelaide and the quarterfinal at the Australian Open, but a wrist injury kept him our for few months. He came back in Madrid, but lost his first match in Madrid and Rome. Having recorded his first win on clay this season, Korda will be feeling more confident and will look to build on the opening round win in the next round.
