The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first match between the 28 year old Italian, and the Argentine, four years younger.

Vavassori Battles Back to Beat Serb in Epic

For the first part of his match with the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic, it looked like Vavassori’s second Grand Slam appearance would end as quickly as his first, beaten in the opening round of Wimbledon last year.

The world number 37 had forced the only break of serve to take the first set, and then eased through the second set for the loss of just two games.

When the Italian went a break down in the third set, the writing appeared on the wall for him.

But, it was at that point that he started his comeback. He levelled straight away and even went a break up, before Kecmanovic levelled himself.

However, Vavassori’s failure to convert three set points when he had them looked like it would come back to haunt him in the tie break, when Kecmanovic held four match points.

Not only did he fail to convert any of them, but he allowed Vavassori to steal the set from under his nose.

The fourth set became scrappy, with holding serve increasingly an issue for both men. In the end it went to another tie-break, which Vavassori claimed.

The fifth set became an epic in its own right. Kecmanovic broke in the opening game, and, serving for the match, had another match point. Not only was that saved, but Vavassori broke back.

Kecmanovic saw yet another match point saved, and it was all decided on a tie break.

This time it was Vavassori’s turn to see match points saved, but, finally, after more than five hours on court, he made one count.

Olivieri Marks Grand Slam Debut with a Win

Olivieri is making his Grand Slam debut in Paris having come through three rounds of qualifying to make the first round.

And, if he had chosen it himself, he could scarcely have wished for an easier opponent than the French wildcard, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, actually ranked six places below him in the world rankings currently.

Olivieri made a strong start, breaking in the opening service game of the match, but Perricard then recovered that. The Argentine had three set points, could not convert any of them, but did go on to win the subsequent tie-break.

However, Perricard then took the initiative by breaking in the opening game of the second set, which he went on to consolidate, and then got his nose in front courtesy of another break which enabled him to take the third set as well.

The fourth set was largely dominated by serve, but, having seen one set point saved, Olivieri was able to seize the next one that came his way, as the match moved into a fifth set.

Then a double break swung the momentum firmly the way of the Argentine, and, after nearly four hours on court, he could finally celebrate victory.

Vavassori v Olivieri Prediction and Tip

Both men are in the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in their career, and both had to come from behind in a five set match to get to this stage.

Their comparative lack of form on the main tours makes this a hard match to predict, but, based on world ranking and his greater experience, the Italian can be regarded as the favourite.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Vavassori to win: 7/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 37.5 games in the match: 5/6
