2021 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas needed three hours and 13 minutes to pass the Jiri Vesely test in the first round on Monday.

The fifth seed struck 12 aces, won 83% points on his first delivery and hit 52 winners in the match to knock out the world no. 452, 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7).

It was a tight finish in the end with the Greek saving four set points in the fourth set tiebreak and coming back from 3-6 down to claim the set and the match.

In the first set too, Tsitsipas had come back after conceding an early break to take a 1-0 lead. He then got the solitary break of the second set to make it two-sets to-love. Vesely pulled a set back and was on the verge of forcing the decider, but the world no. 5 reacted on time to ended the Czech’s tournament in four sets.

Tsitsipas improved his season record to 14-4 on clay. He was a finalist in Barcelona, a semifinalist in Rome and a quarterfinalist in Monte-Carlo.

The 24-year-old, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the final in 2021, has reached at least the round of 16 in each of his last five French Open appearances.
