Jessica Pegula v Camila Giorgi Head to Head

Spread across all levels of tennis, Pegula and Giorgi have faced off nine times and the American leads 7-2. At the highest level it’s 5-1 in her favour while on clay Pegula leads 3-0.

Their last meeting came earlier this year at the Indian Wells Open where Pegula over a first set loss to defeat Giorgi in three.

Pegula Has No Problems against Collins

Danielle Collins is a former world number seven having reached the final of the Australian Open last year. Having drawn her for the first round of a Grand Slam might have been worrisome for a few other top-10 players but Pegula showed no signs of any of that.

In fact, once she had gotten into the rhythm, Pegula barely spent any time on court before winning 6-4, 6-2 to reach the second round.

Pegula was on court for an hour and 24 minutes and was broken thrice in the match but Collins never seemed to have a sniff. This is because it was always Pegula who grabbed the lead at different points in the match and Collins had to play catch-up.

She did that till the second game of the second set when she broke Pegula to level it out at 1-1 but from that point on it was all one-way traffic in favour of the world number three.

The kind of form that the Madrid Open quarterfinalist Pegula is in at the moment, it does look like it would be very difficult for her 37th-ranked opponent to stop her here.

Giorgi Eases Past Cornet

The bookmakers called this one right having pegged Giorgi at 9/20 to defeat the local player and the rather experienced Alize Cornet in her opponent. Giorgi, who hasn’t had the best of seasons on clay and was 2-2 on this surface coming into this encounter, sent Cornet packing in straight sets.

Giorgi won 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 44 minutes despite struggling to hold her serve.

In fact there were a whopping 11 breaks of serve in a match that had just 19 games, which was indicator enough of how difficult it became for both players to get their serves going.

This can be see from the fact that Cornet got just 52% of her first serves in and won just about half of those points too. It was even worse for Giorgi whose first serve figure read 42% in, and 48% of those won.

Still, a whopping 22 winners compared to Cornet’s five is where the match turned in her favour.

Giorgi will need to do a lot better with her serve against the world number three.

Pegula v Giorgi Prediction and Tip

Pegula should be a runaway winner here with Giorgi not having too much to go by against a solid all-round player. Straight-set win for Pegula can be expected.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Pegula to win: 4/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Pegula to win in straight sets: 10/11
