Musetti Doesn’t Have Much Trouble against Ymer

Mikael Ymer was entering the French Open on the back of a match default against him and the big question was whether he had cooled down sufficiently to give him a fair chance against a player of the pedigree of Musetti.

There were no repeat of his chair-breaking antics this time around but that did not help either as Musetti overcame a bit of a slow start to put up a solid showing. The Italian won his opener against Ymer in straight sets to make it to the second round at the French Open for the second time in his career.

Musetti was on court for more than two and a half hours thanks to his slow start in the first set but once he had gotten into his groove there was no looking back. He won 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 to seal his second round berth.

What was interesting to note was Musetti had 20 break-point opportunities in the encounter and he earned six breaks of serves. On the other hand, he was broken twice, off the two chances his opponent got and both came in the first set.

In fact, at one point Ymer led 4-2 in the first set but from that point on there wasn’t too much looking back for Musetti.

Musetti will now look to build on this as he aims to emulate his best ever performance at this tournament – a fourth round showing in 2021.

Shevchenko Ousts Otte in Three Hour

It was a four-set contest that took Shevchenko three hours but in the end the 87th-ranked player came through against Oscar Otte to earn a French Open win on debut.

Shevchenko overcame six breaks of serves in the encounter including five in the first two sets to send the former world number 36 packing from the tournament. He won 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2) as he added another feather to his already burgeoning cap of performances this season.

Having started the 2022 season as a 328th-ranked player, Shevchenko’s consistent showings across all the levels of tennis have helped him climb to his current 87th ranking.

This consists of his third round appearances at both, the Madrid Masters and Italian Open where the Russian needed to make it through the qualifiers to add to his string of wins. Now comes Shevchenko’s real test as he faces a player who is gunning for a top-10 spot.

Can he pull off a bit of a miracle?
