Hurkacz Wins Up-and-Down Battle Against Goffin

World no. 14 Hubert Hurkacz had a tough first round contest against David Goffin and the Belgian stretched the Pole to five sets. But in the end the 13th seed survived to advance to round 2.

Making his sixth appearance at the French Open, this is just the third time that Hurkacz has gone past the first round. His best result at the clay court major was a fourth round finish last year. If he wins on Wednesday, he will be playing in the third round at Roland Garros for just the second time in his career.

In a see-saw contest on Monday, Hurkacz was broken in the very first game of the match, but he bounced back with two breaks of serves that handed him a 1-0 lead. The second set had a similar feel, with the Pole getting an early break, but Goffin wiped off the advantage later in the set and then got a decisive break to even the contest at one-set apiece.

The third set followed the same pattern as Goffin broke first, but Hurkacz broke twice later to take a 2-1 lead. Goffin dominated the fourth set to send the match into the decider but he could not carry the rhythm into the final set. Hurkacz got the only break of the set in the fifth game to secure a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory in three hours and 40 minutes.

A winner in Marseille earlier this year, the six-time tour-level champion improved his season record to 18-11 following Monday’s win. He is 4-4 on clay in 2023.

Griekspoor Survives Scare

World no. 39 Tallon Griekspoor survived an opening round scare as he defeated Spanish qualifier, Pedro Martinez in five sets to advance.

The Dutchman started off well by taking the opening set, but the momentum shifted towards Martinez over the next two sets as the Spaniard broke Griekspoor twice in the second and then bagelled him in the third totake a two-sets-to-love lead.

But just when it seemed to be slipping away from the Dutchman, Griekspoor clawed his way back into the contest. He came back from 2-4 down in the fourth set to level the match at two-sets all. In the final set, both held serve over the first six games, but then Griekspoor won four games in a row to win the three hour and 36 minute contest 6-4, 2-6, 0-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Griekspoor, who won his first ATP title at the start of the year in Maharashtra, is into the second round at Roland Garros for the second consecutive year. Last year, he was halted in the round of 64. Can he make it to the third round this year?

Hurkacz v Griekspoor Prediction and Tip

Both players will be tired after their first round efforts and have very little time to recover for their second round match. At the senior level, Hurkacz has a better record on clay, but he has played more as well.

This should be an entertaining contest, with Hurkacz  edging through.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Hurkacz to win: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 38.5 games in the match: 4/5
