Daria Kasatkina v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head

Daria Kasatkina and Marketa Vondrousova are level at 2-2 in their head-to-head. Tehy have played at the French Open before, six years ago, Kasatkina winning that one in straight sets.

Kasatkina Wins Chaotic Opener

Ninth seed Daria Kasatkina went into her opening match knowing the full potential of her opponent Jule Niemeier and needed to play with her all her repertoire to combat the German’s big-hitting all-or-nothing style.

The match itself was a forgettable experience from a neutral point of view, with both players struggling to impose themselves – Niemeier in particular, coming out second best in almost every statistic except for the unforced errors and double faults.

There were a total of 14 double faults with Kasatkina accumulating nine of them. First-serve points won averaged to about 60% and second-serves were worse with Niemeier winning a paltry four out of 24 points.

There were 13 breaks of serve with the Russian star accounting for eight of them. Kasatkina showed a bit of consistency with her court craft and mixing it up. She hit 10 passing shots and 10 lobs in the match using her top spin to pin Niemeier on the baseline and then reel her in before finding the empty part of the court.

Overall it was a good way to get through, 6-3 6-4, but Kasatkina needs a major shakeup to take on Vondrousova.

Vondrousova Outclasses Parks

Marketa Vondrousova is tipped by many as a dark horse at this event and it is hard to argue in that regard.

The Czech, a former finalist here, served up a notice that she is here to recreate happy memories from her run to the final in 2019.

Vondrousova opened up her campaign with a straight sets dismissal of 22-year-old American Alycia Parks, winning 6-4 6-0, and spending just an hour and 11 minutes on Court 6.

The lefty made a slow start to the match losing her first service game. But that was the only time Parks had any success on the Vondrousova serve.

The World No. 60 soon reclaimed back the break, and soon after, broke Parks again to take a 3-2 lead. She went on to wrap up the set 6-4 courtesy of a whopping 27 unforced errors from the American’s racket.

In the second set, Vondrousova went up a level and Parks could not get anywhere near her.

Despite clocking her fastest serve at a maximum speed of 124 mph, Parks was broken three times in the second set. Vondrousova won an astonishing 80% of her receiving points and committed just a single unforced error in the set.

Kasatkina v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

Kasatkina was involved in a helter-skelter opening match that truthfully wasn’t even the kind of tennis you would associate with her. I’m inclined to think she can’t play any worse than that. Vondrousova, by contrast, played beautiful, expansive tennis to take down Parks and has to be fancied to take pull off her first scalp of the week.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Vondrousova to win: 2/5
