This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Sabalenka Starts Strong

Aryna Sabalenka made quick work of Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the opener of Roland Garros 2023, winning 6-3, 6-2 – much to the chagrin of Kostyuk. The latter refused the post-match handshake and got booed on by the crowd.

Of course, it does not faze the in-form, second-seeded Sabalenka. She has had a phenomenal year so far – in fact, she is on track to deliver a career-best season. She is already 30-5 with three titles; by contrast, she closed 2022 at 33-22 and 2021 at 45-18.

To list her highlights, she has titles from the Australian Open, Madrid Open, and WTA Adelaide. Aryna also reached the final in Stuttgart and Indian Wells.

Needless to say, the current World No. 2 has been in an absolutely imperious form so far – but whether it can help her crack the Paris Slam is anyone’s guess.

This is the only major where Sabalenka has not quite managed to make it past round three, having lost thrice consecutively at this stage. This may not be much of a factor when she takes on the little-known Shymanovich.

Shymanovich Makes Personal History

25-year-old Iryna Shymanovich reached the second round in a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. Starting as a qualifier, she had to overcome the likes of Joanna Garland, Margaux Rouvroy, and Mai Hontama.

Then in the opener, she battled Hungary’s Panna Udvardy and won 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-1.

That win puts her at 24-11 in 2023 – including her 14 wins and 5 losses on clay courts. All of these positive results have come in ITF events – which also entails her runner-up feat in Palmanova in March.

Shymanovich is a decent doubles player, too; she has bagged six ITF Finals and one WTA title (Copa Colsanitas) so far in the season.

Sabalenka v Shymanovich Prediction and Tip

This one is Sabalenka’s to lose. Shymanovich may have some rhythm to her game, but she lacks the experience of going toe to toe with the tour elites. Expect no surprises in this match between the number two and number 214-ranked players.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Sabalenka to win 2-0: 4/7
  • High-Risk Tip: Tauson to win 2-1: 9/5
