World no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz is off to a brisk start at Roland Garros after he knocked out Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli in the first round on Monday.

The 20-year-old Spaniard, who is the youngest top seed at Roland Garros since Bjorn Borg in 1976, needed an hour and 57 minutes to knock out the Italian qualifier 6-0, 6-2, 7-5.

Alcaraz converted 7 of 18 break points and saved 3 of 4 to defeat the world no. 159. During the match, Alcaraz struck 26 winners, made 30 unforced errors and won 18 of 20 net points. Overall, the Spaniard won 60% of total points in the match to get off with a convincing win.

The 2022 U.S. Open champion improved his Roland Garros record to 7-2. He had lost in the third round on his debut in 2021, but was a quarterfinalist last year.

Alcaraz is 31-3 this season, which includes a 21-2 run on clay. The world no. 1, who won back-to-back titles in Barcelona and Madrid, would have been mightily disappointed with his third round defeat in Rome to Fabian Marozsan. However, his first round performance in Paris is an indication that he has put the Rome disappointment behind him.

A 10-time champion from 13 finals, Alcaraz has featured in five finals this year, winning four of them, which includes titles in Buenos Aires and Indian Wells in addition to the titles in Barcelona and Madrid.

Taro Daniel was off to a great start as well as he demolished Australia’s Christopher O’Connell in straight sets.

Ranked no. 112 in the world, the Japanese player began the match by bagelling the Aussie and then broke two more times in the second set to take a two sets to love lead. In the third set, O’Connell finally showed some resistance, coming back from a break down to draw level at 2-2, but Daniel got a second break of the set a few games later before sealing the match 6-0, 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 44 minutes.

Daniel made just 13 unforced errors in the match. He won 79% of the points on the back of his first serve and converted 7 pf 10 break points during a comprehensive victory.

This is third third time in his sixth try that the 30-year-old will be playing in the second round of the French Open. He has never made it to the third round in the tournament before. His best Grand Slam showing however saw him reach the round of 32 at the Australian Open last year.

Daniel is now 9-6 at the tour level this season and is 19-14 overall across levels.
