Cocciaretto Stuns Kvitova

Petra Kvitova is one of the best veteran players in the world but even she would have known she needed some luck going her way as she looked to work her way back on the tour. Since winning the Miami Open title, Kvitova had played just one match on clay and lost it to Jule Niemeier.

And Cocciaretto seemed to understand that.

She came out all guns blazing, winning 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 28 minutes. While she was broken three times in the match, Cocciaretto took advantage of Kvitova’s 31 unforced errors and got the better of her opponent’s serve on five occasions.

Cocciaretto also seemed to have taken a lot out of her clay court performances this season. Having won a WTA 125 title in San Luis Potosi, she had also made the second round at both the Madrid Open and Italian Open.

Can she now take a giant step forward by doubling her win count at French Open?

Waltert Usurps Fellow Qualifier Mandlik

It took her three sets in the end but Waltert ensured her first ever win at the French Open by getting past Elizabeth Mandlik.

Waltert was on court for a shade over two hours as she registered a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over her American opponent to set up a second round meeting with Cocciaretto.

In a match which saw a whopping 11 breaks of serves in all, it was the seven that Waltert earned ensured she wouldn’t be facing too many problems. Problems like the one she did face in the second set when Mandlik broke her in the second game and went on to win the set.

Waltert retaliated with a 3-0 lead in the decider following which four breaks of serves were traded between the two. She served it out soon after that to complete the victory.
