Last year, he was a quarterfinalist on his Roland Garros debut. This year, he started off his campaign with a four-set win on Tuesday.
World no. 6 Holger Rune edged out American Christopher Eubanks 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in a close to three hour contest.
After the Dane won the first set through a solitary break, Eubanks got the only break of the second.
Both players exchanged two breaks each in the third set, before Rune went on to dominate the tiebreak. Once he had a two-sets-to-one lead, he raised his level in the final set and broke the world no. 74 twice to move into the second round.
Rune withstood 15 aces and 44 winners from the American. While the Dane struck just 2 aces and 35 winners, but he made just 21 unforced errors in the match compared to Eubanks’ 37. One stat that Rune will look to fix in the second round is the number of double faults. Rue had 9 of them on Tuesday.
With the win, the 20-year-old improved his season record to 28-10. He also has an outstanding record on clay this season, improving to 14-3. Rune was a finalist in Monte-Carlo and Rome and the won the title in Munich.
The four-time tour level champion has beaten four top 10 players this season. He was the boys’ champion at Roland Garros in 2020. Can Rune continue his excellent form on clay in the second round of the French Open as well.

Making a 16th appearance at Roland Garros, Gael Monfils made an entertaining start as he produced a gem off a comeback in the fifth set to oust Sebastian Baez and reach the second round of the tournament.
Monfils trailed the Argentine 0-4 in the final set. But he fought back to draw level at 4-4. However, Baez broke again to lead 4-5 and served for the match in the next game. But the determined 36-year-old refused to go down and he broke back to stay alive. The Frenchman then won the next two games in a row to oust the word no. 42, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.
The three-hour-and-49-minute contest saw Monfils save 11 of 20 break points and convert 9 of 17. He also struck 41 winners but made 71 unforced errors in the contest.
The win was Monfils’s second of the season at any level. His first win had come in the first round of the Ostrava Chalenger.
Currently ranked no. 394th, Monfils is 2-7 this year from all levels. He will be looking to improve that further in the second round.
Rune v Monfils Prediction and Tip
Rune is in incredible form at the moment, while Monfils has done very little this season. The first round win would have bolstered Monfils’ confidence but it would have also taken a toll on his body. He will be drained and it will be interesting to see if he regains his fitness quickly for the second round match. Rune should win this match without much trouble though.
