Ostapenko Overcomes Martincova in Opener

In a first round match lasting an hour and 45 minutes, Ostapenko overcame Tereza Martincova in straight sets to emulate her showing here from the previous season.

Ostapenko, who is a former winner of this tournament, had entered this year’s edition at Roland-Garros on the back of a 6-3 win-loss record. That included a semifinal appearance at the Italian Open where she defeated the likes of Barbora Krejcikova, Daria Kasatkina and Paula Badosa.

Which is why it came as no surprise the Latvian number one started off a 1/7 favourite in this opener.

Ostapenko was forced to dig deep though. In the first set she overcame a break of serve in the fifth game before overcoming her opponent twice. This was followed by the second set in which Ostapenko went 4-0 and 5-1 down before breaking her opponent three times in a row clinch the victory.

She will be a favourite again in round two but Stearns isn’t a player she would want to trifle with.

Stearns Form Continues with Siniakova Win

Less than a year ago, Stearns was ranked outside of the top 500 on the WTA charts. Fast forward 11 months and Stearns has not just broken into the top 100 but there is every chance she is looking to make it to the top 50 very soon.

And that has been down to her form on both, the ITF and WTA circuits this season.

Stearns has already won a couple of ITF titles but even better has been her performance in WTA tournaments on clay. Case in point, the Bogota Open where she made the final. Or the Rabat Open where she was a quarterfinalist.

That’s also why she started off a 2/5 favourite in her opener against Katerina Siniakova, and delivered exactly the result she would have expected from it.

The American won 7-6 (7), 6-2 in the first round, needing an hour and 41 minutes to come through. In a battle to hold serve, 12 of the 20 games played saw the service getting broken but in the end it was Stearns’ ability to hold her serve two more times than her opponent that ensured she came away a winner.

Stearns could make things really tight for Ostapenko.

Ostapenko v Stearns Prediction and Tip

While Ostapenko starts off a 2/5 favourite, Stearns won’t be a pushover we think. The match could go the distance, seeing a third set or at the very least a long couple of sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ostapenko to break serve – Over 4.5: 4/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
