Cerundulo Progresses Despite Minor Setback

Cerundulo has reached the second round of the French Open for the first time in his career, despite Jaume Munar of Spain making it more difficult than he would have liked.

The Argentine started well enough, winning the first five games of the match, and cruising to the first set.

But, seemingly from nowhere, Munar raised his game and two successive breaks of serve enabled him to level the match by taking the second set.

The first four games of the third set went against serve, and then the pair swapped breaks again.

With nothing left to separate them it went to a tie-break, Cerundulo managed to take that despite losing his serve twice.

A break down again in the third set, the Brazilian was staring defeat in the face. But he rallied, broke back straight away, and then went on to win the subsequent tie-break.

The pair swapped breaks in the middle of the fourth set, but, with nothing else to separate them, it went to another tie-break which Monteiro also won.

The momentum seemed firmly on the side of the world number 98 by this time, especially when he went a break up in the fifth set. But Hanfmann found all his reserves of energy to not only break back, but break again.

That gave him the chance to finally serve for the match, and, with the time well past eleven o’clock at night at Roland Garros, he finally took it,
