Rybakina Dispatches Brenda Fruhvirtova

World no. 4 Elena Rybakina made a convincing start in the tournament, defeating the Czech Republic’s Brenda Fruhvirtova in straight sets.

The Kazakh player needed an hour and 20 minutes for her 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Fruhvirtova was the first to break in the opening set, but Rybakina wrapped up the set by breaking twice in the last three games.

Fruhvirtova also got the first break in the second set, but the reigning Wimbledon champion responded quickly and finished with a flurry, by breaking the Czech thrice and taking the last five games in a row.

Rybakina, who was the Australian Open finalist this year, improved her season record to 31-7. She is 8-2 on clay and the win on Tuesday marked her seventh consecutive victory. She had come to her fifth French Open as the Italian Open champion. Additionally she also won the Indian Wells title and finished runner-up in Miami.

Rybakina’s best at Roland Garros so far has been a quarterfinal finish in 2021. She looks in good position to top that this year.

Noskova Advances as Kovinic Retires

Knocked out in the first round on her Roland Garros debut last year, Linda Noskova is headed to the second round this year.

She won her first ever Grand slam match Tuesday after her opponent Danka Kovinic retired during the second set.

Noskova, who reached her maiden WTA final in Adelaide this year, was 6-3, 2-1 up when the Montenegrin retired. The 18-year-old world no. 50 had saved all four of the break points that she had faced till that point and had converted two of the four break points that she held.

Noskova is 18-9 across levels and the win on Tuesday improved her to 5-3 on clay in 2023.

She has been a much improved player this year and Rybakina won’t take her lightly.
