World no. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas knocked out Diego Schwartzman on Friday to move into the fourth round at Roland Garros.

This is the fifth time that the Greek has reached the round of 16 at the Paris major; he has never gone out before the fourth round since 2019.

And the 2021 runner-up is getting stronger with every match in this year’s tournament. His latest success saw him knock out the Argentine in straight sets.

Dominant from start to finish, Tsitsipas won 76% points on his first delivery, struck 34 winners, saved 4 of 5 break points and converted 6 of 18 to dump out the 2020 semifinalist 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.

The two-time Grand Slam finalist had also won the second round match in straight sets, defeating Roberto Carballés Baena 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Tsitsipas has dropped just one set so far in the tournament and that came in the first round, when he beat Jiří Veselý 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7).

The fifth seed, who was knocked out by Holger Rune in the round of 16 last year, will be aiming to reach  a third quarterfinal at the clay court major. In addition to being a finalist in 2021, he was a semifinalist in 2020.

Tsitsipas is in fine form this year. He was a finalist at the Australian Open and is 16-4 on clay. Expect him to keep charging towards another final.

Ofner Edges Past Fognini in Five

Sebastian Ofner’s fantastic journey at the French Open continued as the qualifier edged out former quarterfinalist Fabio Fognini in a five-set third round contest on Friday.

Ranked no. 118th in the world, the 27-year-old is playing just his third Grand Slam and this is now his best ever performance in a major, topping the third round finish he had at Wimbledon in 2017. This is also his second appearance in Roland Garros. His first had ended in a first round defeat last year.

The close to four-hour contest swung from one end to the other, but in the end Ofner prevailed 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.

In terms of numbers, both players broke each other 12 times in the match, but Ofner had 28 break points in the match and he missed out on 16 of them. In contrast the Italian had 19 break points and he converted 12.

Ofner pounded 48 winners, but he also made 74 unforced errors. In the end the Austrian won 155 total points, which was three fewer than his opponent, but the result is what mattered the most as Ofner’s dream run continued.

Ofner had qualified for the tournament with wins over Rio Noguchi, Jan Choinski and Facundo Diaz Acosta in the qualifying rounds. He then knocked out Maxime Cressy and Sebastian Korda in the first two rounds respectively. Both the wins against the Americans had come in straight sets.

Can Ofner now upset the fifth seed and reach a maiden quarterfinal?
