Mertens Shocks Pegula

World number three Jessica Pegula was exhibiting signs of sparkle in the tournament so far and the talks had already moved to whether she had it in her to go deep into the tournament and even win this one.

Mertens had other ideas though.

The world number 28, who had earlier overcome Viktoria Hruncakova and Camila Osorio in the first two rounds of this year’s French Open, sent Pegula packing from the tournament in the third round.

The Belgian won 6-1, 6-3 to send Pegula the way of Caroline Garcia, Maria Sakkari and Petra Kvitova, all of whom had come into the tournament as top-10 seeds and lost earlier. Mertens needed a mere hour and 22 minutes to win this.

Two breaks of serves in the first set is what helped Mertens run through it and after an early trade of breaks in the second set, the Belgian broke again in the seventh game. She held on and then got the better of Pegula’s serve for the fifth time in the match to clinch her fourth round spot.

Pavlyuchenkova in Another Upset Win

Pavlyuchenkova has fallen drastically in the rankings after being away from tennis for a while and she had to return on the ITF circuit for starters earlier this year.

She then made the second round at both, the Madrid Open and Italian Open but lost 6-0, 6-0 at the latter to raise concerns about her form.

A quarterfinal at the Strasbourg Open seemed to have erased those issues but more importantly given Pavlyuchenkova her self-confidence back. She first defeated the talented Linda Fruhvirtova in the first round here and then surprised Liudmilla Samsonova in the second.

And coming into her third round match as a second favourite again – she was a 7/5 underdog – Pavlyuchenkova overcame the loss of the first set against Anastasia Potapova to defeat her Russian counterpart in three.

Having reached the final of this tournament in 2021, Pavlyuchenkova is showing she can compete at the highest level and attempting not just to go the distance here but also claw back on her rankings.

Can she push Mertens aside here?
