Djokovic Overcomes Davidovich Fokina

He is aiming to win a 23rd Grand Slam title and regain the top ranking this fortnight at Roland Garros, and Novak Djokovic took another step towards achieving that on Friday, when he overcame Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets.

While he didn’t drop a set in the match, the win wasn’t served on a platter and he had to work hard for it. The first two sets went the distance, with Djokovic coming out on top on both the occasions. The 36-year-old Serb then took charge of the final set to score a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory in three hours and 34 minutes.

Djokovic is yet to drop a set in the tournament. he had begun his campaign with a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic and he followed that with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-0, 6-3 victory over Márton Fucsovics.

A two-time champion at Roland Garros, Djokovic is into the fourth round for the 14th consecutive year. Overall, he will be featuring in the round fo 16 for the 17th time in Paris. Varillas Wins Another Five-Setter

For the third consecutive round, Juan Pablo Varillas dug deep to secure a five-set win and keep his chances alive at the clay court major.

The 27-year-old Peruvian, who had a 0-2 record in Grand Slams prior to this tournament, earned a spot in the fourth round with a gritty win over 13th seed Hubert Hurkacz, who too had won his first two matches in five sets.

While he had to overturn a two-sets-to-love deficit in the first two rounds, Varillas won the second set in the third round to tie the match at one-set apiece. He then took the third as well, but the Pole forced the decider by taking the fourth. The world no. 94 put up a dominant display in the final set and broke the world no. 14 twice to complete a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-2 victory.

Varillas had earlier beaten China’s Shang Juncheng 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round and Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 in the second round.

Having almost played for three-and-a-half hours in the first round and three-hour-and-45-minute matches in the second and third rounds, Varillas will be mentally and physically drained. It will be interesting to see if he can recover quickly and give Djokovic a run for his money.

Djokovic v Varillas Prediction and Tip

Given his experience, his past achievements and current form, Djokovic goes into this match as an overwhelming favourite. Varillas has done incredibly well in the tournament, but it will be a huge ask to take down the 22-time major winner. Expect Djokovic to ease into the quarterfinals.
