Rune Storms Into Fourth Round

Holger Rune is into the fourth round of the French Open and the Dane hasn’t had to do much yet.

The world no. 6, who was tested by Christopher Eubanks in a four-set opening round contest, had received a second round walkover against Gael Monfils. He then took on Grand Slam debutant Genaro Alberto Olivieri in the third round and breezed past the world no. 23 to make it to the last 16 for the second straight year in Roland Garros.

Last year, Rune had made it to the quarterfinal on hisFrench Open debut, but was beaten by eventual finalist Casper Ruud in four sets.

In his third round match against the Argentine on Saturday, Rune lost his very first service game, but came back from 0-2 down to take a 5-2 lead, thanks to a triple break. Olivieri pulled one break back, but in the end Rune prevailed in the first set.

The 20-year-old Dane then put up a dominant show in the second set. He lost his first service game in the third set as well, but quickly took charge of the set and eventually won the two-hour contest 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.

A 29-10 overall record and a 15-3 record on clay are a reflection of Rune’s fine form this season. He has featured in three finals this year, winning in Munich and finishing runner-up in Monte-Carlo and Rome.

Cerundolo Ousts Ninth Seed Fritz

World no. 23 Francisco Cerundolo bounced back after dropping the first set to upset the ninth seed Taylor Fritz in a four-set third round contest on Saturday.

In a two hour and 49 minute contest, Cerundolo saved a set point on his serve at 4-5 (30-40), which turned out to be a huge moment in the match. Had fritz converted the break point he would have won the fourth and forced the decider. But Cerundolo kept his chances in the set alive. He then broke in the next game before serving out the match for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory.

The Argentine, who hit 40 winners and made 56 unforced errors in the match, held 21 break points, but he could capitalise on just six of them. Fritz meanwhile had 15 chances to break Cerundolo and the latter saved 11 of them.

This is Cerundolo’s best ever showing at a Grand Slam. He had reached the third round of the Australian Open this year after recording his first two victories in a major.

At Roland Garros, the world no. 23 began with a four-set win over Jaume Munar. He then cruised past Yannick Hanfmann in straight sets in the second round.

Thanks to the three wins in the tournament, the Argentine is 16-9 on clay and 23-14 overall.
