Ruud Rallies to Beat Zhang in Four

Last year’s finalist Casper Ruud stayed on course for a repeat performance this year as he knocked out China’s Zhang Zhizhen in the third o=round on Saturday.

This is only the second time that the Norwegian has reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros.

He lost a fiercely contested first set in almost an hour, but found his rhythm in the second set and kept getting better as the match progressed to win the contest 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.

Broken thrice in the match by the world no. 71, Ruud converted 6 of 11 break points to register his second straight four-set victory. In the second round, Ruud had beaten Italy’s Giulio Zeppieri 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

That had followed a straight sets win over Elias Ymer in the first round.

Ranked no. 4 in the world, the 24-year-old had finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal last year. He had also reached his second Grand Slam final at the U.S. Open last year.

He didn’t get off to a god start this season, struggling through the first quarter, but the transition to clay helped and Ruud began turning things around in Estoril, where he captured his 10th career title from a 16th final.

Ruud is 14-5 on clay this season and will be aiming to reach a third major quarterfinal on Monday.

Jarry Takes Down Giron

World no. 35 Nicolas Jarry extended his winning streak to seven matches as he knocked out America’s Marcos Giron in the third round of the tournament on Saturday.

Jarry, who had captured the Geneva Open title just before the start of this year’s French Open, is into the fourth round of a big tournament for the first time. He had never gone past the second round in a major and has never gone beyond the third round of an ATP 1000 tournament.

The 27-year-old Chilean has been in outstanding form this year, particularly on clay, wining two titles in Santiago and Geneva. He was also a semifinalist in Rio and has a good chance of reaching a first major quarterfinal in Roland Garros.

Overall, Jarry is 20-7, across levels on clay this season.

He had begun his French Open campaign with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win over Hugo Dellien, before pulling off an upset win over 16th seed Tommy Paul. The American had taken the first set, but Jarry eventually won 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5.

Against Giron, Jarry won the first two sets with ease. He missed out on a match point opportunity in the third set tiebreak but he found his rhythm again in the fourth set to beat the world no. 75, 6-2, 6-3, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3.

Ruud v Jarry Prediction and Tip

It’s not even been two weeks since Jarry beat Ruud in Geneva. So the Chilean may go in with a bit of psychological advantage. But Ruud knows how to soak in the pressure in big tournaments. He reached two Grand Slam finals last year and that experience should stand him in good stead in this contest against Jarry. Expect a tight contest with Ruud advancing.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ruud to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 39.5 games in the match: 5/6
