Muchova Ends Lucky Loser Avanesyan’s Run

Karolina Muchova ended lucky loser Elina Avanesyan’s promising run on her Roland Garros debut.

Muchova ousted the world no. 134, 6-4, 6-3 to move into her maiden quarterfinal at the French Open in her fifth attempt.

The Czech player will be aiming to reach a second major semifinal on Tuesday. Earlier she had reached the final four at the Australian Open in 2021. She also has two quarterfinal appearances in Wimbledon.

Muchova has played well in the tournament, dropping just one set on her way to the last eight stage. She began with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win over eight seed Maria Sakkari, then edged out Nadia Podoroska 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 in the second round.

Muchova then sent the 27th seed Irina-Camelia Begu out of the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the third round.

Against Avanesyan on Sunday, Muchova needed just two sets, but the win didn’t come in easy. Avanesyan broke the Czech twice in each set, but the latter converted 7 of 16 break points to win in an hour and 39 minutes.

This is the fourth quarterfinal that Muchova has reached this year, but she is yet to reach a semifinal this year. Can she do that in Roland Garros?

Pavlyuchenkova Scores a Third Consecutive Comeback Win

2021 French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is two wins away from reaching her second final at the clay court major.

The Russian fought back from a set down for a third match in a row on Sunday to oust Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the fourth round.

Pavlyuchenkova, who had beaten fellow Russian Liudmilla Samsonova 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the second round and compatriot Anastasia Potapova 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the third round, defeated Mertens 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 on Sunday.

Her only straight sets win on her road to the quarterfinals came in the opening round against Linda Fruhvirtova, whom the Russian beat 6-2, 6-2.

Pavlyuchenkova, who missed out almost the entire season last year due to a knee injury, is 10-1 in Roland Garros from her last 11 matches. She finished runner-up to Barbora Krejcikova in 2021 but had to withdraw from the French Open last year. This year, she came into the tournament with an 8-9 season record at the tour-level. But has picked up from where she left on the clay court major.

Can Pavlyuchenkova beat the higher ranked Muchova and reach her second semifinal in the Paris major?
