Sabalenka Enters First QF in RG

World no. 2 Aryna Sabalenka entered her first quarterfinal at the French Open with a straight sets win over Sloane Stephens in the fourth round on Sunday.

Sabalenka, who had never gone past the third round in her five previous main draw appearances at the clay court major, needed an hour and 41 minutes to beat the world no. 30, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

The Belarusian struck 24 winners, won 77% points on her first serve and converted 4 of 9 break points to win her fourth straight match in straight sets.

She began her campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marta Kostyuk in the first round and followed that up with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Iryna Shymanovich in the second round.

Continuing her dominance, the second seed defeated Kamilla Rakhimova 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16.

The reigning Australian Open champion is 33-5 this season and 13-2 on clay.

In addition to the first major, Sabalenka also won titles in Adelaide, Indian Wells and Madrid and finished runner-up in Stuttgart. Can she keep her winning run going on Tuesday?

Svitolina Into Her Fourth RG Quarterfinal

World no. 192 Elina Svitolina won her eighth match in a row on Sunday to defeat Daria Kasatkina and move into her fourth quarterfinal at the French Open.

The Ukrainian, who returned from a maternity break at this year’s clay season, was off to a 0-3 start at the tour level, but she embarked on a winning run in Strasbourg, going on to win the title by beating Anna Blinkova in the final. She has continued the winning momentum at Roland Garros.

Svitolina began her campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Martina Trevisan. she then scored two come-from-behind wins, beating Storm Sanders 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in round 2 and Blinkova 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 in round 3.

Against world no. 9 Kasatkina, Svitolina saved 4 of 9 break points and converted 6 of 12 to extend her perfect record against the Russian to 7-0.

Into her ninth Grand Slam quarterfinal, Svitolina will be hoping to reach a third major semifinal. She had reached the final four in Wimbledon and the US Open in 2019.

Sabalenka v Svitolina Prediction and Tip

Svitolina has made a strong return after giving birth to her daughter Skai last October. She has a strong record in Roland Garros but is yet to reach a semifinal. Sabalenka on the other hand may not have as good a record as Svitolina at the Paris major, but she is in red-hot form this year, has played a lot more pressure games than the Ukrainian and has consistently beaten quality opponents.

So while Svitolina is expected to give a tough fight, Sabalenka is expected to come out on top.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sabalenka to win: 2/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
