Sabalenka Eases Past Svitolina

It turned out to be a controversial ending to her quarterfinal but one wonders if that would have any effect on how Sabalenka goes in her next encounter.

Because while Sabalenka did not have a lot of difficulties in her 6-4, 6-4 victory over Elina Svitolina it was her action at the end of the match that caused a few ripples in the media and among fans around the world.

Sabalenka waited at the net to shake hands with Svitolina after her hour and 38 minutes long encounter but the Ukrainian player has already made her stance clear – she wasn’t shaking hands with Russian and Belarusian players.

Svitolina would later go on to slam Sabalenka for her gesture.

The match itself saw Svitolina put up a bit of a fight as she held her serve till the eighth game of the first set before dropping it in the ninth. Sabalenka quickly wrapped it up in the very next game to grab the set.

Sabalenka then went 2-0 down in the second only to break Svitolina twice in a row and won the match off her second match-point.

It was her fifth successive straight-set win and she enters the semifinal on the back of a 14-2 record on clay for the year.

Muchova Ends Pavlyuchenkova’s Run

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova had made a solid comeback to competitive tennis after having been out of action for months and having fallen to 333rd in the world. Muchova, however, ended that run as she registered a 7-5, 6-2 win over the Russian to move into the last four.

Muchova, who had never reached the fourth round at this tournament before this, was on court for an hour and 40 minutes to seal her second Grand Slam semifinal spot.

In a first set of fluctuating fortunes, Muchova broke early to go 2-0 up but Pavlyuchenkova levelled things out at 3-3. Another break of serve gave Muchova a chance to serve for the set at 5-4 but she was broken back yet again.

It was only in the 11th game that the third break for Muchova counted for something. She served it out to 15 in the next and ran away with the second set with two breaks of serves without any return.

Muchova’s journey to the semifinal has already seen her beat Maria Sakkari in the very first round, before her victories over Nadia Podoroska, Irina Begu and Elina Avanesyan.

Can the Italian Open quarterfinalist put up a bit of a fight here?
