There has been one previous meeting between these two players and surprise, surprise, it was Haddad Maia who won that 2022 Toronto Open match.

Swiatek Rips Past Gauff

There has been six previous instances of Swiatek having played Cori Gauff and she had won every single time. And in straight sets too.

And if one thought it would be any different this time around, one would have to wait for things to change.

Because for the seventh time in a row, Swiatek registered a straight-set win over Gauff and did so in an hour and a half without much of the proverbial eye-lid.

Swiatek won 6-4, 6-2 with just one break of serve against her in the encounter. And even that came after Swiatek had taken a 3-1 lead in the first set. She broke again when Gauff served to stay in the set at 4-5 before adding two more of them in the second set to clinch the victory.

19 winners and 15 unforced errors punctuated Swiatek’s victory even as she was helped by the 23 unforced errors off the Gauff racquet.

This win followed a run of four matches in which Swiatek had dropped a mere nine games. It included four bagels and in its own way meant that Swiatek had faced her first tester of sorts. And even that lasted only 90 minutes.

She will look to avenge her previous loss to Haddad Maia and make it to another Grand Slam final.

Haddad Maia Shocks Jabeur

Having gone into her quarterfinal at whopping 12/5 underdog odds to win against Ons Jabeur, Haddad Maia was in early trouble as she lost the first set in a jiffy following the loss of her serve on three occasions.

The Brazilian number one turned things around in the second set when she managed to hold her serve better and while she wasn’t able to get past Jabeur’s serve either, it meant she was able to extend her opponent’s stay on court.

That had a bearing on the way things went as Jabeur failed to rise up to the occasion in the ensuing tie-breaker and then fell two breaks down in the deciding set.

While Jabeur did pull one back, Haddad Maia followed it up with two more service breaks to pocket a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 win and clinch her first ever Grand Slam semifinal and just second such spot in a tournament WTA 1000 or greater.

This was Haddad Maia’s fourth successive three-setter in the tournament having also come back from a set down to defeat Ekaterina Alexandrova and Sara Sorribes Tormo in the previous rounds.

Swiatek could be a different cup of tea,

Swiatek v Haddad Maia Prediction and Tip

Swiatek is in such form that she starts off a 1/17 favourite to win this and 2/7 to do that in two. Haddad Maia’s best chance is to try and push one of the sets deep enough to frustrate the world number one into making mistakes but Swiatek doesn’t look like one to fall in that trap.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Swiatek to win in straight sets: 2/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 17.5 games in the match: 4/5
