Zhang in a Rut

2023 has not been a kind year for China’s Shuai Zhang. It seems that the 34-year-old is now at the tail end of her career.

With an abysmal record of 4-11 and an eight-match losing streak, Zhang will look for redemption in Nottingham. She did reach the final here in 2021, while last season, she was the finalist in the Birmingham Open. Perhaps, things can take a turn for the better on grass courts.

Zhang’s last win on the WTA Tour came back in January – in the Lyon Open, where she beat Madison Brengle. Most recently, she participated in the French Open, where she fell to Magdalena Frech in the first round.

Before that, Shuai had succumbed to the likes of Anna-Lena Friedsam and Julia Grabher in Strasbourg and Charleston.

A former doubles number two with 26 finals on the circuit, Zhang is highly experienced and skilled. With a bit of momentum, she would have a solid chance against Maria.

Tatjana Showing Promise

Tatjana Maria ranked #67 at the moment, has had a pretty decent year overall – all things considered. The 35-year-old German has not let age with a deciding factor. If anything, she is marching on as she is in her 20s.

Last season, she clocked 43-29, while this year, she is already at 24-16. She also has two titles – ITF Pune and Copa Colsanitas.

Admittedly, her clay campaign did not go that great. She lost in the openers in Rome and Paris – respectively, to Anna Bondar and Beatriz Haddad Maia, while in Rabat, she did reach round two before bowing out to Lucia Bronzetti.

That said, Tatjana bounced back last week in ITF Surbiton by reaching the quarterfinal (loss to Katie Swan in three sets). With some rhythm to her game already on grass courts, she should fancy her chances.

Zhang v Maria Prediction and Tip

Tatjana has a good chance to finally get one up against Zhang. The German will start as the favourite and should do well to reach round two comfortably.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Maria to win: 4/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6
